Smokey the Cow Horse by Will James (fifth-grade level). Out of print

The Medalist A wild mustang is trained to be a saddle horse by a loving cowboy, stolen by a half-breed who turns the horse into a monster, eventually becomes a day horse, then is reunited with the cowboy in his waning days. This is the best horse story I've ever read. It has tons of detail about horses, their breeding, their moods, and the lives of cowboys. It is a strong indictment of cruelty to animals. It is an exciting story that has some extremely sad moments. In recent years, though, it has come under increasing fire from the advocates of multicultural literature for its rather overtly biased representation of Mexicans and Native Americans. Indeed, the language and depiction is a little raw.
